Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett The All-Star game was truly that in every sense of the word. The Nationals at last won 4 to 3 in 14 innings. This is one game that will live long in the minds of baseball fans. It had everything. every-thing. Great pitching, fielding and hitting. The Nationals beat the Americans with their one weapon the home run. With the Americaas out in front 3 to 2 in the top of the ninth Ralph Kin-cr, Kin-cr, the Pittsburg seige gun, got one to h's liking and it was long gone. This tied it up and with Larry Jensen of the Giants (Larry (Lar-ry was with Salt Lake in 1941), pitching the kind of ball that managers dream about. He allowed al-lowed one hit, struck out six and only allowed one ball to be hit hard in five innings. The first nine men to face him only hit one fair ball, six went down on strikes and two fouled out. He got Williams, Daley and Kell on strikes, three pretty fair coun try hitters. The American league lea-gue stars were also getting good pitching, and a great catch by Don DiMaggio in the eleventh with the bases full, the game was deadlocked at 3 all until the top of the 14th when with one cut "Red" Schoendienst of the Cards, who had went into play second base, caught hold of one of Gray's fast balls and sent into the paying customers in left center cen-ter for the payoff counter. In the bottom of the 14th Ewell Blackwell, the Cincinatti side armer, forced the great Joe DiMaggio Di-Maggio to hit into a dou'ble play to end the only extra inning game in the 17 year history of the midsummer classic. In our own Industrial league American Fork won the first half title by taking Helpen on the Carbon county diamond 13 to 3. Big Don Asplund pitched a seven hitter for the Towners while the A.F. boys were getting 14, three of them home runs, Owen, Olsen and Tate. The second half has already gotten underway, with Bingham winning one and losing one. They lost to Brigham City 9 to 6 when the Peaches scored four runs in the top of the ninth. Tuesday they took the first half winners, A. F. 10 to 4. There next home game is Friday night against Brigham City. Zac pitched pitch-ed his new pitcher, Trejo, a-gainst a-gainst A. F. although he was touched for 12 hits he kept them well scattered. Owen hit a home run in the sixth with the bases empty for the Forkers. Bingham broke loose in the 9th to score 4 runs and sew up the game. The rest of the league swings to second half action, tonight, . Wednesday. 1 O |
