Lewis, Half of '86 Class, Recalls Early Days; ; 1 . t By BETTY WAUGH , The University pf Utah campus will d the gathering- place . for thousands of alumni Thursday, Friday, and Saturday as the ; former students gather for homecoming rites. ' Old friendships will be renewed,' stories of the "good old days" will be retold and every place the "grads" gather there will be stories told of "old Joe, who was In our class." ' . . . But In the midst of this turning back of time there will be one man who will find no classmates. He Is T. D. Lewis of 921 East First South street, the only living graduate of the class of 1886. In fact, Mr. Lewis was half the class of that year, the only other graduate gradu-ate with a bachelor of science degree de-gree being Benjamin F. Howells, who died a year after his graduation. gradua-tion. . . BeeaUs Early Days Found In his law office In the Judge building Tuesday, Mr. Lewis recalled the university, then known a the University of Deseret, was where West high school now stands. "Dr. John R. Park was president then." Mr. Lewis recalled, "and among the less than a dozen teach, era were Dr. Joseph T. Kingsbury, who later was president of the university, and Heber J. Grant, now president of the L. D. 8. church. President Grant taught classes in bookkeeping." In one respect things were easier for the undergraduates In those days. They did not have to look over a large list of classes and decide de-cide which to take they attended the classes university officials assigned as-signed them. ' Mr. Lewis was born In Salt Lake City In 1865 and entered the University Uni-versity of Deseret when he was 13 years old. After two years he left school to work In a law office. when he spent all his spare time , studying law books, i Graduated at M At the age of 17 be returned to the university, receiving hie degree de-gree three years later. He tha went to the University of Michigan, returning here In 1891. From 1903 ; until 1917 he served aa Judge of ! the Third Judicial district and then , retired to the private practice of law. A week ago he was appointed ' referee In bankruptcy for the fed- : era! district court by Judge Till- man D. Johnson. : Mr. Lewis has four children, all of whom are graduates of the University. Uni-versity. of Utaht One son, David T. Lewis, ' who graduated, from the university's law school two years ago. now assists his father In his office. --' In 1936, the fiftieth anniversary of his graduation, Mr. Lewis was presented with a watch charm by : the university alumni association. As a feature of the homecoming celebration, three members of the university's football team of 1892 will be presented with Indian blankets blan-kets In school colors during the Intermission In-termission at the football game be- . tween the University of Utah and -Colorado university Saturday afternoon. after-noon. The three are Frank Groesberk of Salt Lake City. Raymond C Naylor of San Mateo. Cai, and George C. Mclntyre of Omaha. Neb.' If Mr. Mclntyre is unable to attend the game, his blanket ' will be mailed to him, university officials said. Both Mr. Craesbeck and Mr. Naylor are expected to be on hand. ." " |
