The police judge of a small town was paid a very meager salary. However, he was allowed to fatten his income by keeping a share of whatever fines he levied against petty lawbreakers. The victim later sued her for damages, but the court ruled that she was not liable. Pointing out that the woman had done the best she could in an emergency, the judge said: "She had the right to save herself and her son from peril, and should not be punished for her actions. gruntled violator decided this was unfair and took the matter to the state supreme court.
