We do not presume to suggest what action should be taken by them In .respect of this proposal, but urge thoughtful and businesslike consideration of the measure. Tolling Utah's Story RECOGNIZING that modern promotion methods meth-ods have) been successful in creating out of native wanderlust what has become a major industry, the state senate has before it a measure to appropriate $100,000 to be spent in the next two year for advertising Utah's enticements for the tourist This is the first time such a bill has com before a legislative body here. Certainly it Is a departure, but because of this fact it cannot be argued that It is without merit, The truth of the matter is that it deserves the most serious consideration of the lawmakers. If it is suggested sug-gested that a record budget preclude every unnecessary outlay by the state from public funds, it may be examined to determine whether it is, in fact, an expense or a promising In vestment. Interesting figure have been placed before legislators to show that the tourist "industry" will bring into Utah $29,000,000 in 1937, the estimate of a nationally recognized authority on tourist travel. This, those championing the appropriation measure declare, may be more than the value of the state's principal farm crop and livestock industry's income, double the value of the coal output of the state, equal to more than one-half the value of its mineral production and one-fourth of the manufacture of Utah. If such estimates msy be made to stand up under close study, the advisability of making the appropriation is surely a prospect entitled to more than cursory examination. It becomes a problem for the exercise of calm business busi-ness Judgment Available statistical data show that privately financed advertising campaigns telling Utah's story to the traveler have vastly increased the tourist business here. The nation knows that this is the "Center of Scenic America." Essentially Essen-tially everyone shares in he benefits of increased in-creased travel within the state. Attractions abound for the touring parties roving the coun-. try for the pure enjoyment of it, for those seeking seek-ing new opportunity for profitable investment, for those in search of communities where they may set up new homes.
