"Tha marshal remains the chief of France, all France occupied and unoccupied and overseas," one source declared. "He remains the man in whom all authority rests. . . . Our duty is to follow him, whatever he does or says, whomever whom-ever he chooses, whatever policy ha pursues." It was announced officially that tha council of ministers would meet later Monday. (Laval's place as foreign minister min-ister was taken by Pierre-Etienne Flandin. but at that time Petain Indicated he would not appoint a vice premier. (Reports were heard In Bern, Switzerland, that Laval would be designated to resume his work as France's representative In the interrupted in-terrupted negotiations over French-German French-German collaboration. It was said, too, France might "streamline" her cabinet further, centering authority author-ity In fewer ministers. Petain already al-ready has cut his cabinet from 20 to eight ministers.) |
