In Taxi Stick-Up Held on chargea of robbery are Earl B. Draper, 38, of 1M Hawthorne Haw-thorne avenue, and Carrol H. Chea-ley, Chea-ley, 12, of 820 Bouth Wast Temple street. Detectives Leonard B. Gifford and Fred Lee said Draper and Chealey had been Identified by Gordon V. Charvos, 25, of 231 Third East street, taxirab driver, as the two men who stuck a "cold, hard instrument" against ths back of his neck, told him "This Is a tick-up." and left him to walk from ths outskirts of the city while they drove awsy. The detectives said Draper bas a previous criminal record. The robbery complaint was signed by . Detective Gifford Saturday morning before City Judge Wllford Moyle Burton, who set bail at 11000 each. According to the cab driver, he picked the two men up In the 100 block on East Second South street about 0.30 p. m. Friday, and drove them about the city until they reached Twenty-third East and Twenty-first South streets after having previously attempted to locate lo-cate "a couple of girls." After ordering Charvos to stop the can, one of the men placed the "cold instrument, which felt like a gun," - against the driver s neck, told him It waa a "stick-up" and ordered him to get out of the cab. Then the cab waa driven away, west on Twenty-first bouth street. Charvos got a ride and telephoned police. Traffic Patrolman Richard T. Andersen sighted the cab in the 900 olock on South State strsot a few minutes later, after a police radio broadcast, chased It for about a block and then forced It against the curb. Both men lumped from the cab and tap. Officer Andersen reported, but Draper was collared. Chealey telephoned headquarters about a half hour after Draper was booked to find out what had happened to Draper. Ths call was traced to the Bank Smoke shop, M East Second South street, and Chealey Chea-ley wjs arreated. |
