Show PASS THESE TWO MEASURES ! The Telegram is'glad to see that the Legislature is not overlooking the interests of labor in the consideration con-sideration of legislation which, in the opinion of the law-makers, is most needed in Utah. The strength of union labor has grown wonderfully in the past two years in this State. That splendid . parade of last Labor day demonstrated that to be a union , workingman in Utah means something. While there are a number of skilled mechanics who have not yet joined a union, it is only a question of time until every son of toil in the State will be under the sheltering wing of trade unionism. There are two bills pending, both. of value to workingmen, which 6hould be passed by the Assembly. The first is Senate Sen-ate bill Xp. 41, by Mr. Williams: An act fixing1 nine hours as a day's work for motormcn and coh-. coh-. due tors operating cars upon the street railways of this State and prescribing a penalty for the violation thereof. He it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Utah: fceotion 1. The period of employment of men working as mo-tormen mo-tormen and conductors in operating the cars of the street railways rail-ways in this State shall be nine hours per day, except in . cases of emergency where life or property Is in imminent danger. Any person, body corporate, agent, manageer or employer em-ployer who shall violate any of the provisions of this act - shall- be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor. The other measure which The Telegram heartily heart-ily indorses is Senate bill Xo. 40, by Mr. Bamberger: An act prohibiting the giving or accepting of victuals or board as part consideration for services performed in underground - workings. Tie It enacted by the Legislature of the State of Utah: Station 1. Every person, body corporate, agent, manager or employer doing business in the State of Utah, who by coercion. Intimidation, threats, or by influence of any kind whatsoever, compels or Induces his employee or employees to accept victuals vic-tuals or board as part consideration for labor performed in any underground working, shall be deemed guilty of a mlsde--. meanor, and the employee or employees contracting for or accepting ac-cepting such part consideration shall be deemed equally guilty with such employer or employers. The Williams bill is designed to protect Salt Lake street car niotormen and conductors who now work from twelve to fifteen hours per day. The Bamberger Bamber-ger measure does not require explanation or praise, for it speaks for itself. |
