Show TRADE CONDITIONS SHOW ACTIVITY AND STRENGTH "Exposition Week" Orders Are Stimulating Business Throughout the West; Outlook. Is Bright. NEW YORK, April 29. Advices from Important commercial -centers; while reflecting disturbance due to the prevalence preva-lence of unseasonable weather, says the International Mercantile agency, emphasize the basic strength underlying underly-ing trade conditions with actual results considerably ahead of last year. Continued Con-tinued cold in the South and Southwest has retarded wholesale trade except for boots, shoes, and rubbers where an extraordinary ex-traordinary demand is keeping factories facto-ries working overtime. Excellent business is reported at the West in groceries, dry goods, hardware, machinery, bats and caps, territory tributary to St Louis showing exceptional excep-tional results because of rush orders for "exposition week." Low temperature, while restricting spring business Is aiding aid-ing merchants to close out heavy-weight goods with the result that the stock carried over will be unusually smalL While, advance orders are somewhat backward, indications point to extraor-I extraor-I dlnary activity during May if seasonable season-able weather prevails. Enormous demand de-mand is reported for agricultural implements, im-plements, farmers evidencing lltue alarm over the future. Labor troubles are retarding business In Alabama, Iowa, Colorado and parts of Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania and Ohio. This contributes uncertainty un-certainty to a situation which will, however, how-ever, be in a measure relieved by the agreement of the iron and1 mine-workers- which becomes effective In Colorado on June 1st. That will give partial assurance as-surance of fixed conditions for two years. In other sections more or lees trouble Is being experienced although interference Is not general or calculated calcu-lated to extend materially. This is emphasized em-phasized by the apparent willingness of mining organizations to modify their requests in accordance with restricted output and some evidence of business reaction. |
