Show TWO DARING BURGLARS COMMIT TWO ROBBERIES TWO BLOCKS FROM JAIL Two intrepid burglars committed two daring burglaries a little while before 2 o'clock this morning, robbing two Jewelry stores less than two blocks from the police station of nearly $200 worth of Jewelry. The losers were A. M. Surbaugh, 10 West ' First South street,' occupying' a store in the McCornick building, on the ground floor, and the Western Jewelry company store at 64 South Main street. In each instance a rock, tied in a i handkerchief, was thrown through the window, shattering it, and leaving an orifice through which a barrel hoop was inserted, and the goods In the wln'dbw were raked toward the orifice, through which they were secured by the thieves. Surbaugbs was the heavier loser of the two stores visited. In that window was a valuable ring, worth about $50, which Mr. Surbach overlooked when he removed his stock from the window last right, preparatory to closing his place . of business. He lost also about twenty-five twenty-five cheap Watches, a large number of tie pins and watch fobs. His total loss will be about $150. One of the burglars. In his haste to get at the goods in the window, cut his hand severely on the broken glass, and left a trail of blood behind him when he left the scene of the crime. When the police visited the store last night after discovering that a crime had been committed, found In the window a silk handkerchief in which a stone as large as a man's fist was wrapped. In the window. This stone, after passing! through the heavyi plate glass, went on and smashed a window that separates the show window from the watchmaker's watchma-ker's table and bench. They also found a barrel hoop which the burglars had used as a rake. A boy, employed In the McCornick building, who was Bleeping In an office, saw two men loitering around the windows win-dows of the Jewelry store a short time before the robbery was committed. He went to sleep again, and was awakened by the crashing of the glass. By the time he could get his clothes on and run to the window, he saw the men running run-ning away from the scene. One of these men was short and heavy set, while the other was of medium height. The burglary at the Western Jewelry store was evidently committed first, as there were no blood stains on the window win-dow or sidewalk. There, as in the Surbaugh window, a rock, tied In a handkerchief, was found In the window. It was evident that the men were frightened away before they could have time to make a clean sweep of the contents of the window. Only a few small things, not to exceed $36 in value, were taken from this place. Goods worth at least $50 were overlooked, over-looked, though they could have easily been taken, in their haste to get away. The police have good descriptions of the men, and the detectives are confident that they will apprehend them before they will have an opportunity to. leave the city. |
