PETERSBURG, Jan. 22. The revolt of the striking -workmen la this city resulted today in demonstrations of great stre>h In rarloos parts of the city, and there were many conflicts between the strikers and the troops, in one of which a detachment of Uhlans fired into a crowd, killing or wounding ighty prsons. Father Gapon, the strike leader, was arrested. One of the most serious developments of the day was. that as the strikers strik-ers approached the, Nicholas bridge. The infantry opposed to them laid down their rifles and refused to fire on the workmen. As the strikers approached from VassUlostroff they were stopped by a strong force of infantry, Uhlans and Cossacks. The strike leaders appealed ap-pealed to the soldiers not to' fire on their brothers, and the infantry then i laid down their arms, but the Uhlans and Cossacks, obeying orders, drove the crowd back with their swords, wounding many. A military band was flaying whilethis conflict. was. going -on. - - The Emperor remained at Tsarskoe-Selo. At 2:20 p. m. the mob and troops were in open conflict around the" palace. At 2:55 p. m. the pressure of the mob around the palace square at that time were unable to drive back the dense masses of people. Two volleys were fired into the crowd. There was a gathering this afternoon of 10,000 of the Putfloff strik- " ers, at which speeches were made protesting against the dilatory action, declaring it characteristic of the Emperor's attitude toward the people. These sentiments were received with cheers and shouts of "Down with the monarchy." BULLETIN. ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 22, 5:30 p. m. Barricades have been completed com-pleted at two points in the Vassiliostroff district. The crowds refuse to disperse, and the troops are firing repeated volleys. The report that Gapon, the priest leader, was arrested, proves incorrect. incor-rect. It was another priest. Gapon, although wounded, still continues to head his men. |
