At 5 o'clock this morningr the thermometer ther-mometer registered 6 degrees above zero and showed that the temperature was slowly rising:. At 6 o'clock the mercury had risen two degrees, and it appeared that the coldest part of the day bad passed, but for some unaccountable unaccounta-ble reason the temperature commenced to fall rapidly and during: the next hour I fell six degrees. The thermometer at 7 o'clock registered 2 degrees above zero, the coldest weather of the winter. With" the rising of the sun the air began to get a little warmer, but the mercury climbed the glass very slowly, " " This cold wave was. occasioned by the movement of the" recent storm to the southeast. An area of high pressure prevailed over the Northwest, and as the storm moved away to the south the cold air from the north rushed in. A little over 200 miles to the northeast north-east of Salt Lake, at Lander, in Wyoming, Wyo-ming, the mercury fell to 26 degrees below be-low zero last night, at Modena it dropped to 10 degrees below. At Grand Junction, to the east, it was 6 below, and at Winnemucca. to the west. It dropped to 18 below, which shows that Salt Lake is right in the center of an area of extremely cold weather. The happy owners of sleighs may look forward to several days of good sleighing. sleigh-ing. CANTONS PACKED CLOSE WITH SNOW, INSURING A PINE SUPPLY OP WATER. i Superintendent of Waterworks F. L. Hines says that last night was the coldest cold-est this winter up in the canyons. The channel of City creek was kept open only by the unceasing work of a large force of men. He says all the canyons 'are' packed deep with snow, and that I Salt Lake should have no fears of an insufficient water supply next summer. and did not succeed In getting far away from the small numbers at any time. The weather conditions in this Western West-ern country do not indicate1 that the weather will be any warmer tomorrow, but instead promise extremely cold weather for tonight and- tomorrow, and posBlbly for several days to come. |
