Miss Knecht is a pa- '-t tlent at the Holy Gross hospital. The case Is attracting- wide- ; spread attention in medical cir- 4- ,"'. cles and the outcome is looked -4- for with great Interest by. pbysi- 4- clans and surgeons throughout the entire country. ' ' ' -f -f -f -f 4- -f . -tvf ' j " Dr. J. U. Giesy was asked today concerning;' con-cerning;' the cause of conditions similar "to that of Miss Bessie Knecht. and as to 'the remedies usually, used to. affect cure's. He' said: . - . : ' - -Tumor Hay Be Treated. "Ninety-nine but of every one hundred hun-dred such cases are caused by an abnormal ab-normal growth, tumor or blood-clot on -the brain, or a bony growth on the interior in-terior of the skull, or by a tumor on 'the brain Itself. In such cases an operation op-eration is usually necessary. "If the tumor is near the surface It can be removed by an operation. If It I be deep-seated It cannot be removed, " and there' is no known remedy. Girl Not Hypnotized, i "There are tumors of the brain that can possibly be influenced by drugs internally in-ternally administered. . ' "Catalepsy may be Induced by any ne of these conditions, as well as by hypnotic influence, either self-produced' "or by a second person. "When the sleep is of hypnotic origin the patient becomes rigid and remains o until awakened or death ensues. "I do not believe fr6m what I have heard that Miss Knecht is a cataleptic. Jn all probability she is suffering- from some obscure brain lesion. There is possibly a tumor on the brain, or a bony excrescence on the interior surface sur-face of the skull. "If this were the case, trephining-(would trephining-(would remove it and afford relief. If It were a tumor, a study of the symptoms symp-toms might indicate Its location, and " If sufficiently superficial it might be removed re-moved by trephining.-1 "I doubt if Miss Knecht's condition Is due to hypnotic influence. It is possible, pos-sible, however, that such a condition could be produced. If such were the .case, the only relief would be to have the one who placed her under the hypnotic hyp-notic control revive her. Either he or an hypnotic adept could effect this. Drugs Powerless la Hypnosis. "No drug; has yet been discovered to combat hypnotic influences and stimulate stimu-late the subjects. The condition is purely mental, and can only be reached by mental process. ' "The fact that Miss Knecht Is apparently appar-ently beginning; to recover makes it seem possible that her condition was caused by a blood-clot, the result of a hemorrhage resulting from the rupture of. a small blood vessel. This blood-clot blood-clot Is probably being- absorbed under treatment, and there is a strong- probability proba-bility that she will recover and be restored re-stored to health and strength." - |
