Only the quickness of the groom saved him. . f . The accident occurred in , the speed contest. For this the contestants 'were paired off. .The riders were to start at one end of the ring; Jump their horses forward and bring, them to. a stop at the opposite side.' Then at the end he pulled the' animal back on Its haunches with its noee not two feet from the ring walL The rider was hurled forward- by the sudden stop and nearly- pitched over the animal's head and against the wall. He saved himself, landing well out of the saddle and on the animal's neck. Then he fell. His left foot caught in the stirrup, the spectators sprang to their feet in fright,' and the horse began to plunge.
