"The criminal division of the City court is now in session,"' announced' Clerk Wight promptly at 9 o'clock this morning. morn-ing. In the absence of Judge Dlehl, who is in Los Angeles, Judge Whltaker is sitting sit-ting in his place. The first name called was that of D. M. Cowen. Mr. Cowen had left a "V with the desk sergeant on a charge of being drunk on the first day of the week. D. M. failed to respond to the rollcall and the "V" went into the city cash box. Edgar Wicks and Frank Rogers were charged with having engaged in a fight. As they failed to answer to the rollcall the 110 each which they had left for their -appearance was declared to be the property prop-erty of the city. "Fred Bahy, Mike. Smith. William Burden," Bur-den," Mike Collins, James Murphy," announced an-nounced Clerk Wight. From the mourners' mourn-ers' bench the five arose. "You and each of you are charged with vagrancy," read the clerk from the complaint. The quintette quin-tette entered a plea of guilty. Hla Honor promptly sentenced each of the five to pay a fine of $3 or to spend a like number num-ber of days on the city rock pile. In default de-fault of the money In each case, the city will get fifteen days' labor from the five. F. A. Rivere was charged with being a vagrant. Mr. Rivers had left a "V." with the desk sergeant and as he failed to appear ap-pear the amount was declared the property prop-erty of the city. Jim Collins was charged with having been drunk. "An old offender," remarked Prosecutor Daly to the court. Thirty dollars dol-lars or thirty days was what Jim got. "Don't get 'jagged' on Sunday. If you do. don't let a policeman ratch you. JImraie Hamilton, William Bird and George Hall were charged with having been drunk on the first day of the week, commonly called Sunday. Jimmie, William Wil-liam and George were namea not unknown un-known to the police register and each of them was called upon to contribute $30 or thirty days to the city. John Conners and Mary Conners were each charged with having been druuk on September 16, which was Sunday. Mary and John did not answer to the rollcall. Mary and John had left a "V" each with the desk sergeant, which amount will be taken to the bank, with the reit of the Police court money, by Clerk Wight this afternoon. Harry Hogan. the young mat who was charged with having stolen a bolt of cloth from the People's Cash store on Saturday night, failed to answer to the rollcall. Harry had left $15 with the desk sergeant. ser-geant. Fifteen dollars more for the city. ... Ed Walsh was charged with vagrancy according to the docket. Ed was not present pres-ent "to see whether the charge was true or false. In default of his appearance the $15 which he had on deposit became the property of the city. |
