Hi ring, for many years the managing man-aging editor of the Eagle Magazine, Maga-zine, when he was a University of Notre Dame professor in 1904. Hering made the first plea for such an observance at a memorial mem-orial service conducted by Indianapolis In-dianapolis Eagles. Aeries in many cities .started to celebrate their own Mother's day and the national na-tional Eagle organization in 1912 set aside a special day of tribute to mothers. In 1914, Congress took cognizance of the growing number of observances and asked ask-ed President Wilson to designate a national Mother's day. The day set aside, the second Sunday Sun-day in May, was suggested by Miss Ann Mae Jarvfs, a Philadelphia Phila-delphia woman, an ardent advocate advo-cate of a Mothers' day, who proposed pro-posed that day because it was the anniversary of her mother's death. Miss Jarvis suggested that the observance be marked by the "-""B ui uuii.muiis, ner mother's mo-ther's favorite flower. Hering's role as the originator of Mother's day was recognized by the American War Mothers who presented him with their Victory medal, upon which was ! inscribed: "Father of Mothers' Day". Previously Hering had addressed ad-dressed the first Mothers' day program of the organization at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier Sold-ier in Arlington national cemetery. ceme-tery. O |
