The principal gains were in the industrials and specialties. American Locomotive and U. S. Reduction preferred rose 2, American Smelting 14. International Inter-national Pump and Hocking Valley about a point, and L. & N. and Amalgamated Copper . . Speculation broadened out considerably and there was a large accumulation of stocks of the lower grade, especially those of Industrial companies and of recent re-cent formation. All of the well-known stocks were also bought on a rising scale, but the demand for these quickly abated when the professionals came ln to take profits. Business which had been on a very large scale, slackened to almost nominal proportions when the market began be-gan to run off. A feature Of the trading was the perpendicular drop of IS. points in Butterlck Publishing company, with variations from 2 to 4 points between sales. Most of the Important fealns were United States Reduction. Xfc. the preferred Great Northern preferred and Pressed Steel Car 2, Paclflo Coast and Knickerbocker Knicker-bocker Ice- 1H, and L. & N., New York, Chicago . & St. Louis second preferred. Amalgamated Copper, Brooklyn Transit, Colorado Fuel and - Distillers Securities 1. The market became active again with a renewal of the upward movement. Steel sinking fund bonds sold at par for the first time ln the history of that bond. Not much attention was paid to the increasing in-creasing strength of many obscure specialties. spe-cialties. Improvements in the standard stocks were moderate and trading dull. Union Pacific and Pennsylvania rose a point. Chicago Produce. CHICAGO. April 16. The wheat market today was weak on. general selling by pit traders, which was caused by world shipments ship-ments greater in amount than had been expected and the large receipts in the Northwest. May wheat opened H4c to Mfc lower at 79&7c, advanced to 79T4c and then declined to 79c7S)c. Minneapolis, Min-neapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported, re-ocipts re-ocipts of 416 cars. . The corn market was strong. May opened unchanged to He higher at 46 46i. sold at 4Gc and held steady around 46vG4iiC. The market in oats was easy. May oats opened &'.. c to Wctc lower at Slra32c, sold up to 3232Mc and then declined to SlVflSJc. Provisions market was firm, but very quiet, prices holding steady because of a 6c advance in live hogs. July pork was 2i5c up at $16.32V(rt6.35: lard was up ZVt at $8.82H; ribs advanced 2c to $8,824.
