Speaking of the Southern States at the banquet of the Southern society last night Francis B. Looml.v former Assistant Secretary of State, said: "The uncontaminated, uncalculatlng Americanism of the South promises to be a potent, a conservative and saving influence at a time when people are talking feverishly of strained economic econom-ic conditions, of nolltical unrest and social upheaval. "We have been told with lavish expenditure ex-penditure of energy that pretty much everything la wrong. Furthermore, we are Informed that no Government can be counted a success which permits the rich to grow richer, 'while the poor grow poorer. "Certain of the counts In the indictment indict-ment unfortunately are justified. In so far as Ideals of commercial and public conditions have been elevated and better bet-ter standards of business or political morality evolved, the present agitation has been Invaluable.
