Show Anarchy in Poor Old Colorado. They have something very closely approaching anarchy in Colorado. When the Supreme court of the State decided, upon the flimsiest kind of evidence, that fraudulent votes had been cast in certain precinctsv it threw out not only the fraudulent votes, but those that were genuine as well, thus subverting the will of the people. That was a crime against the prln- tiples of American government. Now the Legislature, notwithstanding it has been proved beyond question that Alva Adams received re-ceived a majority of the legal votes cast at the last election, has declared his defeated opponent, Pea-body, Pea-body, elected.. It is the result of an infamous bargain, bar-gain, Peabody having bound himself to resign and to allow the Lieutenant-Governor to fill the office. Having accomplished his ends, it is now intimated that Peabody will fail to carry out the latter end of the agreement. It is done in the sacred interests of party. Republican Re-publican members of the Legislature refused to unseat un-seat Adams to. put Peabody in, but at the call of party they became accessories to' the scheme to seat McDonald, the Lieutenant-Governor. It makes no' difference whether Peabody or McDonald Mc-Donald occupies the executive chair, . the offense against law and right is just as grave. The people of Colorado elected Adam to be Governor of the State, The Legislature, also elected by the people, has assumed as-sumed powers not delegated to it by law, and has overridden the will of the people expressed at the vl a w They did things in the same way in Kentucky several years ago. The result was the assassination of Gov. Ooebel, a crime that shocked the world. It was the result of harlotry in politics. The same nefarious calling is being practiced in Colorado. The men who are doing these things, who are , lawless.and. who are teaching the people to despise the law are few in number. The majority of the American people are good citizens and would scorn to do such things. But the trouble is we let the few do as they please. Colorado has had sore trials with anarchists of cne sort and another. The law has been flaunted and trampled upon by men of all classes. Dynamite and rifles superseded ballots and courts for a time. At last it seemed sanity had returned and that the election last fall had cleared the atmosphere, but the scoundrels of politics could not rest. They must needs do a thing that is likely to precipitate worse disturbances than have been dreamed of. After a time Colorado may free herself of the evil brood that have done so much to harm her, but she will have to pay a terrible price for her folly in allowing them to do what they have done. |
