The Call publishes a dispatch from Honolulu Hono-lulu this morning which says that Miss Berner, who was Mrs. Stanford's secretary, secre-tary, has named Ah Wing, a Chinese cook who has been employed at Mrs. Sanford's home for over twenty years, as the person whom she suspects of having placed the strychnine in the bicarbonate bi-carbonate of soda. Kept Under Surveillance. Ah Wing, with the other servants in the employ of Mrs. Stanford, Is now confined in-the Stanford mansion on California street by private detectives, under orders. It is said, of the personal attorney of Mrs. Stanford. They are f not allowed to leave the bouse, and a watchman is on guard at the gate day . and night with orders to prohibit all persons from approaching the dwelling. ' Besides Ah Wing, there are two other 4' Chinese servants and the housekeeper at present in the house. Much Soda on Place. ' Since the announcement was received that strychnine had been found in the bottle of bicarbonate, detectives have ' made careful search of Mrs. Stanford' . California street home and her plac In Palo Alto. At both they have found one-pound cans of Imported bicarbo-' nate of soda. The can at the Palo Alto home had not been opened, but front the one discovered in the California street mansion there had been taken a small portion, presumably the amount needed to fill the small bottle that Mrs. Stanford carried, with her to Honolulu. Free of Poison. Both of these cans have been analysed ana-lysed by a loeat chemist, who has pronounced pro-nounced their contents absolutely free from any kind of poison. With this knowledge in their possession the detectives de-tectives have been eager to discover1 who refilled the small bottle and possibly possi-bly mixed the bicarbonate of soda with strychnine. |
