Show AWFUL WEST COAST OP VANCOUVER. ISLAND HAS WRECKED MANY SHIPS PORTLAND. Or., Jan. 24. Few places In the world have such a record of marine ma-rine casualties as has the deadly "West Coast." as it Is known, of Vancouver teland, which has occasioned the destruction destruc-tion of fifty-six vessels and cost 7U Uvea within the last forty years. Within the month past the West Coast has wrecked the Valencia, and the ships King David and Pass of Melfort. seven lives having been lost on the King David and twenty-six twenty-six on the Pass of Melfort. Besides these, wrecks in which there have been more than ten lives lost, according to the data compiled by the Oregonlan, are: Bark John Bright in 1867, 14 lives lost; steamer Pacific, In 1875, 260 lives; ship Grace Darling, in 1878. 15 lives; bark Mallevllle. in 1882. 20 lives; ship Sierra Nevada, in 1S86, 13 lives; ship Harvey Mills, in 1886. 18 lives; bark Eldorado, in 1887. 15 lives; ship Stephen, in 1887. 22 lives; ship Ivanhoe. in 1894, 23 lives; steamer Montserrat in 1894. 80 lives; steamer Keeweenah. in 1894, 81 lives; schooner Jane Grey, in 1898, 34 lives; British Bri-tish warship Condor, In 1902, 80 lives; schooner Triumph, in 1904, 32 lives; ship La Morns, in 1904. 26 lives. |
