Show BOXER IS GIVEN SURPRISE BY ATTORNEY WHIiTEMORE York city. He was a member .or the training; corps of the class of '83. It was this pame crew that took Oxford's laurels away from the noted English university on the Thames in the water supremacy of an International event. In those days Mr. Whittemore knew how to use his hands. This story proves he knows yet. Mr. Whittemore was a treat exponent of the manly art. In his collegiate days In New York there was a'llttle coterie of Columbia, Co-lumbia, boys who knew how to box. Looked for Trouble. In those days this little set In order to cet action used to visit the places where the "bad men" in New York congregated and purposely start a fight. Then a ring would be pitched and the two would go at It. Sometimes the men of the Bowery and East Side would win. but more often the Columbia Colum-bia boys did the head-cracktng. Many a bout was pulled off with the referee being none other than Mr. "Billy" Mo Glory. v But that was years ago, when Mr. Whittemore was young. He has been hard at work years since. Lately he Attorney C. O. Whittemore leaves for Las Vegas' tonight. Mr. Whittemore is general counsel of the Salt Lake Route. He is busy now superintending the letting let-ting of contracts for the rushing to completion of the fine big station which is being erected at this division point. It will be fashioned on the old Mission style of architecture and will be the finest station on the entire line. Mr.. Whittemore is also busy collecting collect-ing the stories of the first pioneers over this road. The men who "Blated the Trail" back In the earlv '70s. There are about fifteen now alive. Mr. Whittemore, back in the '80s, was a student at Columbia college in New decided he would go in for a course of training. He selected the Jonathan club in Los Angeles as the place to gel In trim again. The physical instructor at this exclusive club Is none other than Prof. Eddie Robinson, well known here In Salt Lake through his connection connec-tion with the Alta club. Professor Astonished. Mr. Whittemore Is in Los Angeles every week or two. He was-there last week. After some work in the gymnasium gym-nasium there Prof. Robinson said to him: "Suppose I teach you to spar. Now put on these gloves. Hit me as hard las you can, providing you can reach me. I will not counter In return. I will merely show you how to dodge blows." Mr. Whittemore got into position. They fiddled for a few moments. Then came an opening. A right swung out. Crack, it landed on the point of the chin. Then there was a thud in the corner. ' It was ten minutes before Robinson was revived. "Say," he gasped, as he managed to come around, "for the first lesson you're learning damn fast. There'll be no more lessons today." Mr. Whittemore never said . a word. Until this' story is printed Prof. Eddie Robinson will never know that he was up against a man that knows the art of hit, step and get away with the best of them, and that as a gentlemanly boxer he ranks with any of the clubmen club-men of the country. . |
