Show M'CLELLAN CAPTURES DENVER AUDIENCE The Denver Republican of last Wednesday has the following enthusiastic enthusi-astic notice of two ' well-known 1 Salt Lakers: "John McClellan, organist at the Mormon Mor-mon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, gave a recital at the -Central Presbyterian church last evening which proved a rare treat to the large audience that had gathered to hear him. Swept by the hands of a master, the keys of the fine organ were responsive, and thero rolled from the throbbing pipes a flood of melodious sound such as has seldom filled the great auditorium of the popular pop-ular edifice. Through It all the people sat attentive and ekpectant, well re warded for their attendance. "Mr. McClellan la a young man in years, but he Is one of the great organists or-ganists of this country. The Instrument In the Tabernacle Is one of the largest and most effective In the land. The Instrument In-strument In Central church is also quite worthy the attention of the great musician mu-sician who ptayed it last evening. Whether It was the delicate flute-like piping of an andante or the swelling rhythm of a splendid crescendo. It was capable, and the programme was so arranged ar-ranged that Its possibilities were fully tested. "Mr. McClellan does not try for the big effects, and there Is nothing spectacular spec-tacular about his work. It Is his delicate deli-cate shading In the softer compositions that appeals to one. and is where he is most effective. His programme covered cov-ered a wide field, taking meritorious selections se-lections from most of the great composers com-posers whose work was prepared for or has lent Itself to adaptation to this instrument, in-strument, such as Guilmant, Godard, Schumann and others. Undoubtedly the most pleasing selection last evening was an andantlno, 'To My Wife by L. mare. It was by request, and the audience au-dience la Indebted to the one who suggested sug-gested It. The auditors became enthusiastic enthu-siastic over it and demanded an encore. en-core. ! , . "A very pleasing feature of the concert con-cert was the singing of Hugh Dougall. His voice is a strong baritone of pleas-' lng quality, which he manages with skill. He appeared - twice, but - aang fragments of eight different selections, compositions from masters. It was a trying performance, but the singer acquitted ac-quitted himself -excellently, aa.was attested at-tested by the hearty applause that was accorded him." |
