In the hope of saving her scalp, which was torn from her head in the mill where she is employed, yesterday, the physicians at St. Mary's hospital have undertaken a remarkable grafting operation upon Mrs. Pearl Laurlllard, 23 years old, of 104 Turner Tur-ner street. - ' Mrs; Laurlllard was combing out her long tresses at the mill at Howard and Palmer streets Saturday afternoon. The hair caught in a belt attached to the machinery and she was lifteh high in the air and whirled about. Her hair and scalp were torn completely off, the latter taking with It her right ear and right eyebrow. As she fell her hand caught in -a cog wheel and the thumb was cut off. She was hurried to the hospital. Here Dr. David O'Donnell determined upon a daring operation. The woman's scalp, with the attached hair, was bound on her head, and held firmly In place. A salt solution was used to prevent mortification. mortifica-tion. All last night the physician, who was assisted by Dr. Westphal, sat beside the patient. She is in a serious condition, suffering from the shock of the frightful ordeal. Dr. O'Donnell believes that the operation may be successful if she survives the nervous shock. |
