Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett The world of sports was hit hard this week. The big train pulled into the round house after af-ter his last run. Yes, Walter Johnson has gone. He leaves be- hind the greatest pitching record of all time- Johnson is the man that caused the saying "you can't hit 'em if you can't see 'em" to be coined Pitching against "Who's Who" Sam Crawford, he blazed three by him and Sam never took a swing. On going to the bench Sam's manager asked j him why he didn't take a cut and for an answer he got the now famous reply. Probably his greatest great-est feat and the one that is likely like-ly to stand for all time, is pitching pitch-ing three games in four days and winning them all by shut outs. He did that against the New York Highlanders, that are now the Yankees. One year he won 36 and only lost 6 and this with a second division club. Johnson was born in Kansas but was sent to the big leagues from Weiser, Ida. He pitched for only one team, the Washington Senators. Yes, Johnson is gone j as we all must do when that greatest of all umpires says, "your out." Another great figure in the world of sports was called away this week, Damon Runyon. He was a writer Of short stories that had no equal His characters of "Harry the Horse" and "Louie the Lug", are known to every short story reader the world over. ov-er. Runyon got his start in Pueblo, Pueb-lo, Colo., and went from their to end up at the end of the rainbow, rain-bow, Hollywood. A writer of sports gone to cover bigger events. ev-ents. Mike Jacobs, the ruler of champions cham-pions is dangerously ill in a New York hospital. Mike has risen from the lower east side of New ! York to be the greatest boxing promoter of all time. Doctors say i should he recover he will have to, take it easy from here on. Who will take his place? My guess is Jack Dempsey. So this week the world of sports has lost three great figures. Basketball is in full swing and Coach Allsop of the Miners tells me he thinks he will have a pretty pret-ty fair team. Utah is picked to win the Big Seven crown, but I think they will get an argument from Wyoming Wyo-ming and BYU. Our M Men under W. Nichols are having a pretty good year. We have an independent team, the Ramblers that are going great funs. Johnny Susaeta is coach. They are all veterans and they team up like champions. Will let you know when they play in Bingham so the fans can come out and see them. Andy Verapapa won the bowling bowl-ing match game championship averaging 221 for the route. Andy An-dy is nearing 60 years old. Just to show you that bowling is a sport for all, here is a comparison. compari-son. One of the stars of the tournament tour-nament was a 22-year old boy by the name of Baymiller, and the man Andy had to beat was Al Brandt who weighs about 125 pounds. So size, shape or age makes no difference when you get a bowling ball in your hand-Our hand-Our friend Leo Rollick finished sixth. Not bad believe me for this first shot at this, the greatest great-est of all bowling championships. See you next week. AL |
