Show Dr Fishbein's Health Talks By DR MORRIS FISHBEIN When you ou do not get sufficient sleep your work worl the next day is I bound to suffer Almost everybody has observed this fact on himself but like aU all beliefs ot of mankind this one has recently been subjected to selen uric study Some at the thc sity of Chicago e experimented with sl six men who on different occasions occasion went without sleep for lor 60 hours During Dur Ing these waking hours the students were tested ns as to their ability to stand upright with their C eyes closed ed their reactions to sound and light liht arid and their mental ability in a simple men tal test In addition the Investigators tested the men who went vent without sleep as asto asto to th their lr ability to hold their hands steady the accuracy of their vIsion and imd the e of their skins to the thc sense or of touch and of pain It was fo found nd first ir t or of all tI that at it was wasl much harder to keep awake and much more difficult to pass teaLs sue sue- in the hours between 3 and C 6 o'clock in the morning which are arc the u usual ual hours hour of best sleep leep than It Itis i. i is to keep awake or pass tests successfully success success- fully later during the day When we are short ol of sleep we wc are rc likely to be much more irritable than when we have had sufficient sleep Indeed as as the length of time without sleep continues we we may seem to be semiconscious Some ot of the men stared out Into space and actually resembled people who had a little too much alcohol and were about to pass out On going to bed after a long period of sleeplessness sleep the men fell asleep I almost immediately and slept for as long as 31 1 to 12 hours instead of the thc usual eight or nine hours ot of sleep The hands ot of the men without sleep were found to be much more unsteady than those who had rested ThIs ob observation Is ex cx- important for men who work In industrIes where accurate movements ot of the hands are necessary sary sart ns as for example jewelers ma ma- and chemists These tests however should be particularly important to those who drive motor cars A man who drives an automobile must be able to respond re re- spond quickly to unusual situations his hand must be steady y and he must S be constantly aware ot of what Is going go ing on The case of modern driving be cause of the automotive developments and the development or of modern hi high high- h. h wa ways s 's have caused people to drive 10 12 and 14 hours a day without rest Actual test test-s show that the longer the period of work without rest is continued the less safe it is for the I driver and those who depend upon him |
