Show First Street Car Similar to Stageroach ; Boilv Turned When the world's first street railway was opened in Now York in 1832, the cars were horse di awn and, except for their cast-iron wheels, resembled the stagecoach, having a high seat in front for the driver nnd a door in the rear for the passengers, says Collier's. Thus, as those cars could not be operated from either end like Inter models, they were equipped with a device that enabled the driver, at the end of the line, to raise the body a few inches above the wheels and turn it in the opposite op-posite direction. |
