Show SLOPE DOPE COPE By TOM MATHEWS I i 1 I I Slick roads and speed nearly wiped out a dozen skiers last Sun Sunday Sunday Sunday day morning After AHer all the skidding and crashing had ended three cars were immobilized just before the Y at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Cottonwood Cottonwood Cot- Cot canyon One vehicle driven by bv Dick Mo itz was off of the road and resting resting resting rest rest- ing against some trees Its front end was completely complete wrecked Mel Me I Dalebout Evelyn Naumann Bill Angelos and Jim Crockford were in the car besides Mope Up the road was a sedan driven by Jim Huse who had as passengers passengers passengers pas pas- his wife Ann Mae Scott Kay Driscoll Randy Bush and Estelle Estelle Estelle Es- Es telle Wilson Vilson Their car had been sideswiped from stem to stern Both of these automobiles had been hit by a coupe driven by Dale Cunningham who was driving down the canyon Cunningham said his car went out of control when another unknown vehicle coming up the road hogged the middle In Cunninghams Cunningham's car were Jim Fawn Maddox and Richard Van Cott Cotto Traffic stalled behind the tangle for a block and er e everyone one milled about asking if it anyone were hurt Fortunately no one was wai Dalebout received a conk on the head and Crockford was momentarily knocked out but both were up i ia in ina a minute I State highway patrolman Dan I H. H Beckstead gave Cunningham a citation for reckless driving The whole sorry incident points up the necessity for everyone to observe traffic caution in the can can- yon Th The fact that the major percentage percentage percentage per per- of drivers are careful will not prevent accidents and in the tightly limited ice lee covered road only one careening car can smash smashup up several others The Alta AHa road has a fine traffic safety record considering the natural driving hazards and the steady traffic on onIt onit It We Ve hope that every driver will subordinate to the general good his desire to get somewhere in a hurry 0 Some people will risk life and limb in order to avoid putting on chains for the climb up to Alta AHa We Ve dont don't mean that as a charge but merely as a comment For instance we were grinding our way up in commonplace fashIon fashIon fash- fash Ion when who buzzes by but Earl Miller racing chairman of the Edelweiss Ski club at Provo He was sitting alone in the car His passengers Joe Hilbers Irma Inna Stirman Stirman Stir- Stir man and Peggy Miller were all riding on the rear bumper They look looked d like a bunch of I II I gandy dancers on a hand-driven hand railroad car In order to give the rear wheels traction they were doing deep knee bends all the chilly way up from the gate to Alta AHa The traction problem was solved much more easily by Dr L L. L whose tudor is equipped with ith I sawdust tires Youre ribbing us Doc we chided but he assured us that he had sawdust in his tires He must have something because his performance at Tanners Tanner's flat Hat had us popeyed Someone had tried the road without chains and just above e the flat Hat had come to a spinning spinning spinning spin spin- ning halt jamming up the other cars behind Dr was right behind us The road at that point was steep and covered with dry snow He started his motor after several cars ahead had moved and we warned him in our ignorance that I he couldn't slalom up through the maze of still stalled cars With a calm Oh I think we can he eased his car into gear and started off without a slip Not only did he do this from a dead stop on a steep icy ley hill but buthe buthe buthe he went slowly and surely through the maze without spinning a wheel We Ve couldn't believe it but right now we are figuring a wa way to get I sawdust into our rubber |
