Show ARMS AND AND THE THE MAN AT KINGSBURY KINGSBURY RY j i Shaw Play Scores Delightful Hit By SALLY DIXON DIXONA A delightful play George Bernard Bernard Bernard Ber Ber- nard Shaw Shaw's Arms and the Man was presented pr by a a delightful caslon cast casl caston caston on a 11 delightful spring evening Sat at Kingsbury hall on the University of Utah campus Thursday night Broadway players Frances Reid and nd Philip Bourneuf were delightful delight delight- ful too Even the audience proved itself delightful few delightful few as as' its members were were Why the night first-night c era crowd r o w d should have been so disappointingly disappointing- disappointing ly y small was not answered Perhaps Perhaps Per Per- haps laps the university theater group has las a season that is too long and too tuo oo packed full ull of oC drama and comedy considering the many visiting players and other artists that hat came to Salt alt Lake City dur- dur during during ing ng the past year The Utah symphony symphony symphony sym sym- phony and Salt Lake theater group came ame in for their proper share of attendance al also o. o A community can absorb financially financially finan- finan and culturally only so much concert and theater in a given period period pe- pe iod ot of time It may be that that much has been absorbed by Salt Lakers by the time the May festival festival festival festi festi- val productions came around this year Attendance Disappointing Whatever the reason III it is too bad ad there were were not more Salt Lakers at Kingsbury hall last night for as good fan an evening of theater heater as any local or visiting group graup ha has provided this year The object of the Ute year-old year festival festival festi- festi val al plan is to provide good entertainment entertainment enter enter- and to permit local players play- play ers rs to have the opportunity of working with the outstanding I stars tars of the nation Reid and Bourneuf in the leading roles of Jf Arms and th the Man filled the the bill ill on both counts The University University sity ity Theater cast blended beautifully beautifully fully ully with the New York artists and nd both groups are to be com corn mended highly on the smooth per per- Needless Needless to say Ray both Bourneuf and Reid were excellent In their romantic roles as the Swiss soldier and the daughter of a wealthy Bulgarian And Ethel Baker Callis w who whose h o s e performance as Mrs Holmes in The Magnificent Yankee Yankee Yankee Yan Yan- kee won her the Theta Alpha Phi award for 1918 was a superb support support support sup sup- port for the Broadway players She plays the part of the young girls irl mother Stanley Russon Good Another player always welcome on Salt Lake stages is Stanley Russon who held the leading role during the p past t. t season in the Play Play- box revival of oC Peter Grimm Russon Husson holds another fine role in Arms and the Man and plays it to the hilt that hilt that of the wealthy Bulgarian soldier father to Raina Major Roy B B. Gibson takes the role of Sergius the seemingly ideal soldier It is a difficult part to play and his handling of it is excellent ex ex- Alden Richards another University theater veteran plays Nicola the s servant with an in incomparable incomparable incomparable in- in comparable charm Louka his cop layer the maid maid- servant to Raina is played by blond attractive Julia B B. B Bertoch with all aU the finesse of a Pygmalion Pygmalion malion Her costuming as os with each member o of the cast helped to make the performance a grand grandone one to remember The story of Arms and the theMan theMan theMan Man from which the operetta The Chocolate Soldier was taken intends to to portray the ac actuality actuality actuality ac- ac of a uniform not changing the nature of its wearer Few seem to care what its it's intending to portray though for the play as such is a delightful experience Arms and the thc Man will be re repeated repeated re- re again this Friday and Saturday Saturday Saturday Sat Sat- evenings at Kingsbury hall under the direction of Dr C.
