E L DICK ROMNEY The model T formation is about as old as the game of f foot foot- ot- ot ball jail itself Alonzo Stagg of Chicago university used it with great success with the Maroons and all ali teams teams- coached in the Notre Notre- Dame Rockne style of p pay ay used it some In the he rj Notre Dame system the Irish hid had their teams line up in a T IT before going into the shift I always thought that the famous Four Horsemen of Notre Dame ran better from the theT theT theT T before the shift than from the box formation after the shift At Utah Sta State e I used the Hie T formation to some degree degre for forthe forthe forthe the 23 years that I have been head football coach at the tion Yes and at different times we have employed the Ute man man-in- m motion tion principle During that time tune we also used the single w wing double wing and nd the miniature punt formation to-a to toa certain ertain degree degree In recent years years' George Halas of the Chicago Bears 10 in the I I professional league and I Clark at Stanford university have developed this old formation to its present effective and I deceptive heights They have also made use of the old idea of the motion man with great success Some 40 years ago coaches used the motion man-in-motion idea principally from punt formation but a great deal of credit must be given one of the most imaginative coaches in the game and Halas for developing these weapons until many think that by using by-using using them the off offense nse once again has a fair chance with the defense as it is now being employed with its many variations The motion man-in-motion idea will be used from many different formati formations ns now that these men have used it with with- s such ch success from the T form formation tion It might be more effective from the T T with the quarterback handling and concealing the ball on all plays With the quarterback hiding the ball for a a split second the defense has a tendency to freeze waiting for a sight of the balland ball balland balland and in this split second those quick opening plays have a better chance of working Also from the T Tit formation it is easy to toI I I I I see how even two men may be used in motion and still hay have hav threat on a quick opening play on the part of the fullback through gh g any hole from tackle to to ta tackle kle see diagram Other formations do not have the ad advantage antage of as much d e. e eption or as many many- quick opening pl plays ys as the T offense i But with all this we must no not forget that there is no ance that any formation formation T T single ingle wing double wing or or tt other ther ther-i going o ng to win games ganes To win any ny one of these system must be backed b by outstanding and capable players playe s the t must be Well Well coached oa h d and of cou course se the opponent nt must too strong We will undoubtedly find that th the single wi wiand wing i r. r and other formations will b be winning many games this fa fall o S 5 4 lI Heres Here's rc's how ho T Tit can be used against 5 3 t |
