Merrill commented Well study up t to the Civil war so we have a great deal of work ahead of us The Authors club Is celebrating celebrating celebrating cele cele- brating its anniversary in September as it was founded tn In n 1893 at the home of Mrs Re Re- becca Mantle Little widow of former Mayor Feramorz Little Littler The clubs club's purpose was to study the works of great authors authors authors au au- thors and because meetings were first held on Fridays it was known as the Authors Friday FrId Friday Fri FrI- d day y Morning club dub Later the name was shortened to the Authors Authors Authors Au Au- thors Study club and still later to just plain Authors club Three of the charter members members members mem mem- bers of the club are still sUlI affiliated affil atm with it lt They are Mrs Heber J J. J Grant Mrs James E. E Talmage and Mrs Charles F. F Wilcox In addition to great classics of Greece and Rome authors of America England Russia the Scandinavian countries Germany and France have been favorite topics prepared and presented by the members at their weekly meetings Frequently open meetings are held and prominent guest speakers speak speak- ers hold forums and discussions discussions discussions discus discus- about current and vital literary problems and Interests Club meetings are held every Wednesday afternoon at the Lion House social center cente 63 East South Temple street beginning be- be beginning beginning be be- ginning In September mid-September and continuing until May We meet mainly for study purposes Mrs Gordon Taylor Hyde vice president of f the club said but we have our social doings too The club holds luncheons four times a year has an annual annual annual an an- nual breakfast In May and an outing in June There are 22 members of the Authors club and nine honorary honorary honorary honor honor- ary members who are are Mrs Wilcox Mrs Grant Mrs Talmage Talmage Talmage Tal Tal- mage Mrs Richard W. W Young Mrs A. A H. H Christensen Mrs Richard R. R Lyman Mrs I. I A. A Clayton Mrs E E. G. G Gowans and Mrs Rose H. H WIdtsoe In addition to their study program club members have been very active in state and national affairs Among their contributions have been a bookcase filled with books forthe forthe for forthe the Utah Federation of Women's Women's Women's Wo Wo- mens men's clubs' clubs circulating library books for the University of Utah library the university fund the general women's rest restroom restroom room and gymnasium at th the U U.
