Show RUTH MILLETT Says Women in Restaurants Should Eat Their Words Theres There's something about a restaurant that brings out the worst vin in a great many women Women who are charming and gracious in th their ir own houses and in the home of their friends can walk into a restaurant and put on an act that is em em- to watch TakE Tak Take a peek at Mrs Jones and Mrs Smith for example having lunch together after a morning of bargain hunting hunting hunt hunt- t ing during t which they have done a great deal of looking but but no buy buy- ing They walk In Into Into into In- In to a busy restaurant res and cast casta a longing look at tables near the window and see that they are all filled So Mrs Brown says in a querulous Ruth Millett l voice to the fhe h hostess stess showing them to a table you a table near the window That Thatis is Ls just to let the hostess know that they are dissatisfied at the start They sit down glan glance glan e at the menus in front of them but dont don't do anything about ordering until they've talked for ten or fifteen minutes Then they both decide on specials because they are cheaper But it irritates s them to see that little reminder no substitutions and they both decide decide dedde de de- de- de cide they must have corn instead of beans When the waitress says she doesn't think she can make the substitution they tell her to go back to the kitchen and see She does and says Its all right You can have corn They look triumphant a as though she had been trying to put something over on them Then they both change their meat order Finally when the food arrives they look at it suspiciously suspiciously suspiciously sus sus- and Mrs Jones says I 1 didn't know it was cooked with onions I cant can't eat onions onions and and sends her order back Just about that time the waitress waitress waitress wait wait- ress begins to get sulky and Mrs Jones and Mrs Brown spend their lunch hour talking about how much better servicemen get from waitresses than women do But it never occurs to them WHY |
