Show STATE STUDIES UTAH COUNTY'S SAFETY RECORD Deathless Traffic Days Credited to Education c of f Public This is one of a series of articles articles ar or- tides on Utah county's traffic safety record based on a survey survey sur sur- vey tey made in the county by The Telegram n By BOB Bon HALE PROVO June 10 Why has Utah county with a busy complex complex complex com com- plex system of highways bearing heavy travel plus a number o of important municipalities gone to town in traffic in-traffic traffic safety this year Its record of consecutive days without a traffic fatality stood at Monday far ahead of the theother theother theother other units in the states state's metropolitan metro metri politan area The Telegram sought to find out in a survey here and a tour of the county with safety leaders To the observer it might appear that Utah county is just lucky or has attained the dream of traffic safety a dream in which all I drivers and pedestrians do their utmost to prevent accidents Education Stressed The county does not have a great deal of traffic law enforcement enforcement enforcement enforce enforce- ment activity less in fact than its northern neighbor Salt Lake county It has less traffic engineering engineering engineering engi engi- than the latter But it has had considerable traffic safety education and leaders believe this has taken hold of the public to to bring results Those who vho head the safety work credit the advances to public re re- re Denzil A. A Brown president of the Utah county safety council which was patterned after the state council credits the advances to a c consciousness which he attributes to constant pounding pounding pounding pound pound- ing away on the subject of traffic safety Public R Responds Chief of Police Guy Christensen of Provo echoes these beliefs and said that 99 per cent of success of traffic safety here is due to the public We couldn't get anywhere if it weren't for this he said All of which must mean Provo must have a pretty good motoring public since the city has had only one traffic fatality this year and that could be called a freak It involved a a pedestrian crossing in who slipped on icy pavement just as an automobile approached Next More on Utah county's record |
