Show Governor Bloods Blood's Warning GOVERNOR BLOOD recently sounded a note J J of warning to Utah as to mounting state 1 expenditures which was singularly appropriate and deserves far wider attention than it re The governor was speaking at the ceremonies cere I monies in Ogden celebrating the completion of the new state tuberculosis sanatorium It was an impressive occasion The beautiful well well- equipped new sanatorium was extolled by speakers as a fine addition to Utah's roster of institutions an instrument which will save lives and end improve health standards in the state rn All AU that inai is true and ana Governor Blood Bloo AIl is s irue anu tuu AJ v. fa All AU AIl that inai is is s true irue and ana anu tuu Governor AJ Blood Bloo rn v. fa it He was just as proud of the new sanatorium as anyone present It is an institution institution tion of which any state could be proud that proud that any governor might be happy to point to as a concrete achievement of his administration F But Governor Blood was not so much carrIed carried car ear earned If ried ned away by the pride and the satisfaction that he lie did not see the other side of the story of any such governmental project the project the cost And AndI I he not only saw it but he deliberately called attention to it in his address at the cere cere- monies He emphasized that it wasn't just the orIginal original inal cost of such Institutions but the upkeep year after year which must be considered The original cost of the sanatorium to the state will total about plus about given by the PW A not a very great sum But it is probable that the annual cost of maintenance of the institution will equal or exceed the states state's cost for Its construction Its It's fine to have such excellent state Institutions institutions Institutions as the new tuberculosis sanatorium but we must as the governor warned be careful care care- ful ul that we do not pile up such heavy expenses that they exceed the ability of the people to pay Governor Blood pointed out that this year the state is spending more than it is taking In In revenue revenue and and this despite the fact that taxation In Utah Is at an time all high tar far ar above what it was in the years prior to the depression That is not a healthy condition Cert Certainly rily we dare not tax the people more heavily Our only recourse Is to spend less less and and we cannot annot possibly ossi ly do that unless we heed the governors s warning and beware of costly new state those which will require con continuous continuous heavy outlays for their maintenance e. e |
