Show THE HAZE OF OE AUTUMN The hazy atmosphere of autumn like many other familiar conditions of daylight day day- light and dark with which we are so familiar fa as not to question their cause and effect is a subject of study by Uncle Sams Sam's weather men Chief Moore of the weather bureau was asked recently regarding regarding re re- garding this autumn haze His reply was It is dust composed of the finest particles par par- of soil soli dead leaves smoke or ashes ashes ash ash- es from wood fires salt from ocean spray the shells or scales from microscopic microscopic micro micro- diatoms germs of fungi spores of ferns pollen pOlen of flowers fowers etc In the still sti air of damp nights these dust particles settle slowly down and th the morning air all is comparatively clear During the daylight the sun warms the soil soi which heats the adjacent air and the rising air all currents carry up the dust as high as it will go Under certain con conditions this layer of dust reaches higher highe and higher each day During long dry summers In ip India it reaches to a height of feet with a w well defined defined l-defined upper upper surface that is higher In the daytime than at night The reason why we have more of hazy weather in autumn is because because be be- cause there is then less horizontal wind and more rising air Washington Washington Star |
