C Holbrook president of the Utah State Farm bureau told more than ban 1500 members of the organization Wednesday at their tw twenty twenty- nty- nty second annual convention at the Newhouse se hotel Mr Holbrook spoke at the morning morning morn morn- morn morn- ing ng s session and touched upon achievements of the Utah bureau problems confronting it and solutions solutions ions which will aid the industry The meeting will continue through Thursday Of the brighter side of the industry industry indus- indus try ry Mr Holbrook pointed out that the economic status of Utah farmers farm farm- ers improved greatly from 1932 to 1937 In that period he said gross income rose from to 45 an increase of 80 per cent which took the net income from the de deep p red to a small profit Gains Turn to Losses He attributed the increase to abundant crop yields in 1936 and 1937 marketing of crops at high price levels following a year two shortage the change in the gold content of the dollar and the federal agricultural program Although Utah farmers nearly reached a parity by y the the end ld of the 1937 crop year he ne said it it nas has been very discouraging since then that times have changed considerably considerably considerably consider consider- ably and we now have haie lost third one-third to one-half one of the gains made since 1932 What he termed a low standard of living is working i. i hardship on youth and hurting the morale of the rural element causing it to lose its interest in the industry One of the solutions to the present farm problems Mr Holbrook de declared de- de dared would be the removal of all tariff and trade restrictions to permit permit permit per mit farmers to sell abroad at a price at which they have been forced to buy Never was a people more fully taken in and more surely to their their own destruction than when farmers farm farm- ers consented to a system of tariffs which boosts the price of everything they buy and adds nothing to the price of what they sell which in fact has driven from them their foreign market and left the local market glutted to a point beyond all hope of clearing under natural process Because trade restrictions have been so widely approved however it is hopeless to expect material x I edification for years and we might s s well cooperate as best we can Medals Presented Following Mr Holbrooks Holbrook's address medals were awarded three Utah members members' of the Future Farmers of America for outstanding work duning during during dur dun ing the year The recipients were Ruel Rue E E.
