I tv Ati M wY t r car or anywhere at all where there happens happens happens hap hap- pens to be a flow o of electricity I dont don't believe people w will know as much about building sets of the future as they do now Everything is going to tobe tobe be so simplified knowledge of building except to the engineer will ill be sary Nobody gives a whoop now how their electric l lights work in their homes unless perhaps when they occasionally fail to function and radio will be so simple it will be e taken aken as an everyday common sort of an instrument A tube one-tube receiving set is going to togo togo togo go a long way toward solving much of our trouble with present-day present sets Mr Edison went on This one tube will do the work of a multiplicity of tubes such as receivers of today are using It will be placed between be between oe- oe tween two sockets and will be not unlike a sausage in shape In fact I am working working working work work- ing on such a tube m myself self I have not got far enough in my experiments to tomake tomake tomake make any ny positive statements about it but when such a vacuum tube is finally completed I think it will be in a fair fairway fairway fairway way to re revolutionize the industry b 1 r rr r J 4 o 0 I. R EDISON has invented a glycerin MR filter which he he has called the ab stab o stati This r device devi e is designed with a a view to to eliminating ting so some e of f the I. I harshness in reception and to o aid in talc tak ta taking ing the mechanical n tinge out of f a radio set Mr Ir Edi Edison or is deeply co concerned with any device that will tend to make for smoother and more natural reproduction epro of voices and instruments through the radio receiver There is is' is isa a marked tendency at this time of fans ians getting away from rom building the their r rown own own sets This I believe is due to the many and ard varied types of manufactured manufactured manufactured manu manu- outfits now on the market Only a few years ago perhaps perhaps' not more than four the made home receiver r was was afew few firms had the thing since only a taken to manufacturing sets and then only on a small smaIl scale Right now there is a great deal of improvement needed in the loud In many instances the sets are away ahead of the speakers as far as mechanical cal goes Speakers have a away away away way of distor distorting ing reception and taking t tie e naturalness out of the vocal or instrument instrumental instrumental in in- strument I selection being broadcast In the future speakers loud-speakers will be much smaller than the present ones They will hardly b be larger than a persons person's mouth opened wide and I think they will be be so constructed as s to have one part fo for low sound registering and others others others oth oth- ers for medium and high Some of the radio fans are of the opinion tha an aerial must be as high as possible from rom the ground If you have havethe havethe havethe the proper set and it is operated d correctly cor cor- a receiver will work just as well if the antenna is under th the ground O Only ly recently an experiment was made by carrying a r radio dio receiver down a coal coalmine mine shaft in Penns Pennsylvania and the re results re- re were just the same as if the set had been in some ones one's living roomI roomI roomI room I do much of my experimenting with radio in the summer summer time Anyone Any one can get good reception when the air is clear and cold but it t is overcoming the summer summer summer sum sum- mer static that I am after and that is why hy I a am out here in n th the c country dabbling dabbling dabbling dab dab- bling with wireless when the mercury is hovering above everything but a comfortable comfortable com com- t temperature The Government has refused to li license license license li- li cense any any more more broadcasting stations All of which is a fine thing One of the curses of radio today is the overabundance overabundance overabundance dance of stations Fewer and higher- higher powered stations will be the rule in the future Five and six broadcasting plants in one o e city is entirely too many in my opinion Only the best and the finest stations will survive in the future and these will be linked up with one another another another an an- other so that in case of a national emergency emergency emer emer- gency the entire country could be kept posted and if necessary an army could be e mobilized by radio O NE E of the most amusing things about radio or rather the purchase of new sets is the interest displayed b by y women in the furniture That is the cabinet or wooden shell in which the works are incased Friend husband wants a radio set and not period design cabinets is insistent that it be Queen Anne period stuff and doesn't give a hang whether the receiver has five tubes or whether it works at all for that matter In a great many instances the husband has to put up with an inferior inferior nor receiver just because his wife must have something to match the the Chippendale Chippendale Chippendale Chippen Chippen- dale pieces in the living room Big manufacturers are gradually turn turning ng to the dealer authorized-dealer plan in distributing their output It is not consistent to go into one store and be quoted d 50 59 on a standard type receiver and to pass on down the street to the next radio store and find the same set is being sold for 75 You would not expect to to buy an automobile that way and you will not be able abie to buy radios with all aU sorts of price tags attached to them when dealers in each community or city have been authorized by the manufacturing concerns to handle their product WHILE HILE radio is Mr Edison's pet hobby he is very very much interested in aircraft development and automobiles Years ago when th the Wright brothers were experimenting with their first airplane airplane airplane air air- plane Mr Edison then a very young man was one of the interested onlookers and he aided the Wright boys in their tests made with gliders the time I blistered my hands hanging on to the ropes of one of the gliders used in tests by the Wright brothers Mr Edison saidA saidA said A great many automotive engineers in various parts of the country are working working working work work- ing on Son a gasoline turbine engine Mr Edison stated While this this will be a great step forward in automobiles I think within a decade or two even more startling improvements in motorcars will be made And radio ladio is going to have a p part partin rt in hi making the automobile go No longer I lUll mm- mm will ViII it be necessary with a wireless ss motor in your car to stop at the fill filling ng station and tank up with gas Engine trouble will be unknown I believe Cars of the future will be radio operated and radio controlled What I think is going to happen is this Motorcars will be equipped w with th apparatus not unlike a wireless receiving receiving ing set This will be so tuned as to re receive receive receive re- re electrical Waves daves from a large electric electric electric elec elec- generating power plant such as willbe will willbe willbe be built at Conowingo Md This set setin setin setin in the car would receive its current through the air and nd in much the same way as a radio outfit transforms waves into sounds this set in the car would transmit th the electrical impulses received into power to turn the road wheels and thus make the car go Perhaps some progressive firm will have a car car ar for hire and it will be possible to drop a coin in an a slot and we will be beable beable beable able to hop into a radio-propelled radio automobile automobile automobile auto auto- mobile and go where we weike like ike as long as the money holds out It would be a sort of the quarter idea Then again it may be possible to rent a key from th the power company This key would unlock the electrical receiving apparatus in the car and instead of buying gasoline one would be buying his electric cur cur- rent Steam railroads will Swill be almost unknown unknown unknown un un- un- un known in a few years' years time Electrification tion of railroads from N New ew York to Florida will be accomplished in a short time I venture to say that the coal now used on the railroads will be burned right at the mines in the years to come It will be burned however to generate electricity Electric heating systems for forthe forthe forthe the home are only just around the corner A A WORLD in which everything is moved or propelled by electricity or in some way by radio is gradually coming about And the next net ten years will see even more startling developments developments developments develop develop- ments than the last decade has witnessed witnessed witnessed wit wit- Mr Edison said One of the most predicted features of radio for forthe the I c coming ming years and one that cant can't help but come is vision by radio We will be able to sit at our receiving sets and look into the studio from which comes the programs ms Already Already Already Al Al- ready we have pictures sent and received by radio so it is just a question of what next Y YEARS EARS of association with his father has left its impress on the younger I Mr Edison He lIe is never so happy as when talking radio or tinkering with witha a receiving set He smokes incessantly the while he works He is in constant touch by telephone with his fathers father's laboratories at Newark N. N J J.
