I'KKSIDENT ANGUS it. CANNON addressed the congregation. He said it was with heartfelt gratitude to Almighty Uod that he arose on that occasion, rejoicing that ho was still numbered with the latter-day Saints. When he contemplated the tiros peri ty and happiness which existed ex-isted iu their midst as a eo-pie, eo-pie, notwithstanding tho trial-through trial-through which they had jossed, he was led to believe that they were among the must highly favored on thnfaceoftbewholeearth. Traverse these settlements from north ta south, from east to west, and peace, prosperity aud plenty abounded on every hand; aud if any one inqulmi of the people the hope that inspired their hearts, the reply would come tbat Uod had called them from the nations of the earth.by the Prophet's voice, to a land which He bad prepared pre-pared as a gathering place for Hi Saints. Jlere they might be found organized and ready to receive those blessings and truths whii.li God had in store fora people whom He had designed to prepare lor the coming of His Son Jesus Chri't John the Baptist came forth from the wilJerness with thu precious truth that God the Eternal Father had inspired him to proclaim, declaring de-claring unto the people the necessity neces-sity of repentance. It required a manlike John the Bsptlst to do this. He was under no obligations to the nation to which he belonged, having been reared in the midst of a barren waste, having partakeu of rude food which he found where he traveled, and his raiment bclug of the coarsest kind. He could therefore there-fore go into the midst of the Jews in their refinement and declare unto them the necessity of turning unto God and repenting sincerely of thiir ways. The people did rejwiitanJ multitudes thronged the waters of the Jordan, clamoring for baptism. He told them to bring forth fruits, meet for repentance and think not to tely on the ilaini that they had Abraham for their father. Abraham loved his father, ills mother and bis country; but he loved God more, and at God's bid-. bid-. ding he forsook home, country aud everything he possessed, and journeyed journ-eyed Into an unknown land. The lrtrd prospered and blessed him, because be-cause he was faithful. He loved Sarah bis wife, and he also loved Hagar, for she was the mother of Inhmiel. Sarah asked him to send Hagar away; but he would not. The lire of Sarah's boy, Isaac, was in danger from Ishmaei's presence; but notwithstanding this Abraham would nt be moved. Then God spoke unto him and told him to Hud Hagar away, promising that He would be a father unto her rhilJ. Abraham at once yielded, entrusting entrust-ing Isbmsel to the Divine care. With the boy's futuro history Uiev were familiar; GoJ preservel aud oiesseu turn, asfJ multiplied lnsst-cd in the earth. But it pleased the Lord to further try Abraham's laith by telling him to ofTer his son Isaac as a sacrifice, and when lie was about to carry out the Divlno command com-mand tne uplifted hand was stayed. Abraham loved God more than all else. The speaker went pn to remark J that the Latter-day Saiuts had I gathered together Iu these mount-j ain valleys subject to the insulra-l uon, mnuenrc. and control ot Almighty Al-mighty God. on the couditlon tbat they would love Him with all their soul, Berve Him with all their might, and love their neighbora as themselves. The Lord raised up Joseph Smith as a Prophet when a mere boy, and sent holy angels to minister minis-ter unto him.
