One of the most remarkable surgical operations opera-tions in history, and at tho same time a great act of heroic self-sacrifice, was seen this afternoon at Grace Hospital. Lat Saturday Matilda Creech, a tun-year-old girl, had her entire scalp and left car wrenched oft by her hair getting caught In a shaft. Attempts to place the Scalp back and make it grow were futile, and today the doctor tried a new tack. The wound was so large Uiat it would require a tremendous graft to save tbo child. Tbo Iittlo one's sUter Emma, 12 years old, who knew what was wanted, offered to spare her skin for the purpose. The doctors doc-tors decided that to cut the flesh off and put It ou would not tio, tho only way being to make Uie Ilrsh live on tbe one from whom It was taken. They put both irls under the iu-tl'ience iu-tl'ience ot chloroform and then cut a piece of flesh eight Inches long and five Inches wide from Emma's side and breast that is, they cut all but ono side of It, Tho loom end was then stitched to the flesh on Matilda's head and the two little ones bound together eo that they could not pull apart. Heroic little Emma will be tied to her sister by these bandages four days, In which time Uie doctors expect ex-pect the flesh to knit to Matilda's head. Late tonight loth little ones were conscious and Emma evidently suflVring much lain, but she said, Iieiolcally, Uiat she did not caru if it only saved her sister. It U Uie first case on record where a graft of this size has been made, and tbe whole medical fraternity is watching the case with great iutcrtst |
