Democrat In November 1894 he was elected a a. delegate to the Utah constitutional convention which later drew up the state tate constitution He was known then hen for his work In sponsoring a movement for women's suffrage In January of 1896 he was appointed appoint appoint- ed to the chair of philosophy at Brigham Brig Brig- ham Young college Logan and resided resided re re- re sided there until July 1897 when he moved to Salt Lake In the fall of the ensuing year he ie was elected state senator from the Sixth senatorial district and in thu legislature which convened in 1901 I distinguished himself for his tireless labors on behalf of the state Mr Whitneys Whitney's first wife died in May 1000 two years ears after he had married a a. second wile wife May Wells Whitney in the midst of oC the anti antl- polygamy crusade LIKED DRAMATICS In his early years the churchman was keenly interested In public speaking speak speak- ing big and dramatics and at one time was offered a position with a stock company In the old Salt Lake theater He declined this however out of deference deference def del to his parents While attending the university he organized one of the first debating societies there and In later years or organized organized or- or the Home Dramatic club which presented several amateur plays at the Salt Lake theater After Arter serving as bishop of the Eighteenth ward for 28 years Mr Whitney was called caled to the apostleship apostleship apostle apostle- ship of ot the L.
