Last night tbe overland Southern Pacific passenger pas-senger train, south bound, went through a long trestle over Like Labisb, near Salem. The trestle mut have given ay as soon as th-englne th-englne struck It. The train and trestle went down together. The engine was overturned and halt burled lu mud. Following this were the tender, mail, baggage and express ex-press car, smoking cars and tourist sleepers. They were all broken to pieces and neatly every passenger on the train Injured. Kngineer John McFadden, fireman TItj Keal and au unknown man. were killed. Following are among tbe injured: Captain Jack Crawford, the poet; scout, bruised; Mrs. T. C. Btcrl.) and Mary nnd Kellio Boyle, Mis soula, Mont; Dr. Hammel ana wife, Philadelphia, both injured alMUtthcspIne;Ja0.McGarry,deputj United (states marshal, bait Ijtke, Utah, nose broken, leg probably broken and badly Injured Internally; It Is feared he will uie. The train carried nearly a hundred hun-dred persons and nearly every one was Injured. The number of deaths from tbu accident will probably reach ten, as many sustained probably prob-ably fatal injuries. The body of a tramp A as taken out ef the wreck, making four dead. Fires were built along either side of thi train to keep the wounded warm aud light the way of the workers to rescue. Aa soon as doc tors from Salem arrived they set about dressing the wounds and ministering to the needs of tho Injured. In-jured. It is now thought that the accident acci-dent ou the Southern Pacific lat night was caused by the removal of a rail, and that the work was done by tramps. C. Grelbel of Milwaukee died today, making flo dead. It is probable that several of the Injured In-jured will die. The'coroner'g jury tonight re. turned a verdict that the wreck was caused by an unsafe bridge, and thit the bouthirn Pacific Company was guilty of criminal negligence. |
