Show Russia was $136 that of the Uni- ted States $537 or four times as great as Russia's. This in itself would mean nothing but the great difference between he amounts that Russians and Americans had to spend to buy food, clothing, etc., is mighty important. Here follow some retail prices prevailing prevail-ing in both countries in 1937, the last year for which, comparative prices are available. The Russian figures are those prevailing in Moscow which were lower than elsewhere in Russia: Russia U. S. White bread, per .lb .15 .09 Coffee, per lb $4.37 .26 Rice, per lb 59 .08 Rib roast, lb 87 .35 Fresh milk, qt. 30 .12 Butter, 1st qual., lb. 1.81 .35 Eggs, per dz 1.32 .35 Women's rayon hose 3.20 .30 Men's work shoes 34.85 2.85 The Russian System certainly doesn't look like a bargain, does it? The Russian had one-fourth! of the income of the American ' and paid out of that smaller in-1 come a much greater price for . his necessities and for those i privileges (?) he had to give up his right to be a free individual. "Planned Economy", as demonstrated demon-strated by Russia, has nothing to : offer us. Perhaps, after all, we should keep our American system by means of which we became the greatest nation in the world's history. At least, let's hold fast to it until these system salesmen can show us a real bargain. PLANNE ECONOMY IS NO BARGAIN (By Georgg Peck) The American housewife is noted not-ed for her shopping ability she knows her values she axamines, she compares no merchant can overchrge her or "slip over" an inferior piece of merchandise on her. Now, there are some merchants of economic systems who are trying try-ing to "slip over" one or other of their panaceas on the Americao people. Here is where the American Ameri-can housewife can exercise that same fine sense of determining values val-ues which she brings into play at the butcher's, the grocer's and the department store. One of the systems that these merchants are trying to sell us is the "Planned Economy" system. That is the kind that takes away individual freedom, makes the individual in-dividual the servant of government, govern-ment, in return for which government govern-ment is supposed to guaranee security se-curity to the individual. Fortunately, we have one of these "Planned Economy" systems sys-tems on display. We can examine it and compare it with our own -American system. Before buying it and swapping in our own on it, let's see if we would be making a bargain. Russia is the country where we can see this "Planned Economy" system in the showcase. show-case. The Russians call it "Communism" "Com-munism" but that's just another name for the same thing. Russia has had this "Planned Economy" system on display since 1917. How have the Russians fared under it a compared with how we Ameri-ens Ameri-ens hve done under our Ameri-cn Ameri-cn system. Some of the salesmen of the Russian system admit thai to date we have done better in America, but they try to account for it by stating that our greater success is no due to our system but to our greater natural resources. re-sources. This is deliberate misrepresentation mis-representation because Russia possesses equal, if not greater, resources than America.
