Show 'GRANT THORN IS AWARDED STATE HONORS Native Of This City Named Utah's Most Outstanding Young Man A singular honor came to Springville Spring-ville this week with announcement that one of its local sons had been selected as the outstanding young man in the state. Grant Thorn, who has gained naticSnal recognition as a candi- - 1 ,;r J. - y -J h f, ' :( date for president of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, received the title of "Utah's most outstanding young man of 1945," at a dinner meeting in his honor Sunday at the New-house New-house hotel, Salt Lake City. The dinner also honored W. Hughes, Brockbank, Salt Lake City, who hasbeen appointed direction, of the national Jaycee organization. Announcement of the selection of Mr. Thorn as Utah's outstanding outstand-ing young man, made for the first time as a statewide award, was made by Earl F. Cardemann, coordinator, co-ordinator, Salt Lake City board of education and chairman of a four-man four-man citizens' judging committee. Presentation of a distinguished service award key was made to Mr. Thorn by Frank Fister, state Junior Chamber of Commerce president. I The dinner was attended by approximately ap-proximately 250 state officers, directors di-rectors and other guests, and the principal address was made by Adam S. Bennion, vice-president of the Utah Power & Light company. com-pany. He praised Mr. Thorn's civic activities and expressed tribute trib-ute to the leadership of youth. In a short talk made by Grant, in accepting the honor, he stated that young leaders of this state have a definite challenge confronting con-fronting them and by accepting and discharging this challenge an even greater and stronger America Ameri-ca is insured. In addition to the state leaders in attendance at the dinner, Mr. Thorn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Thorn, also his wife and a number num-ber of local Jaycee member, including in-cluding Kay Johnson, Verl Whiting, Whit-ing, Fayne Laney, Steve Miller, A. H. Mortensen, Wallace Patrick, Lewis Bird, Don Rigby, Ernest Boyer, Herb Miner, Ray Klauck, also Frank Carnesecca and Stanley Stan-ley Bird from the Mapleton club, attended the meeting. In addition to being a candidate for president of the national Junior Jun-ior Chamber of Commerce, Grant is a past president of the Utah State Junior Chamber, and a Past President of the Springville club. He has held numerous positions in other civic organizations and has been active in many wartime projects. He is a member of the advisory council, veterans' service commit- tee and the Utah centennenial committee. He also was recently elected vice-president of the Associated Asso-ciated General Contractors. |
