Show 'delayed election urged in japan Gen. Douglas MacArthur declined de-clined suggestions of the Far Eastern Eas-tern Commission this week that the Japanese elections be delayed until after April 10, on the ground that the reactionary warmaking elements of Japanese political life were now thoroughly disorganized as a result of the Supreme Commander's Com-mander's recent political purge. The effect of his directive of Jan. 4, Gen. MacArthur pointed out, has been to bar from public office or candidacy 90 percent of the pres"en Diet, as well as numerous num-erous persons holding high office, with the result that the reactionaries reaction-aries have suffered more than the moderate parties. . Oppostion to the MacArthur's plan was voiced by the Russian and New Zealand delegates on the Commission, who held that an early election would be won by the wellorganized groups that dominated Japan through the war years. However, the rest of the commission was won over to his argument. |
