SPORTS .... The First ward M Men basketball basket-ball team won the Division Six tournament at Provo with a decisive dec-isive win over Alpine, previous two-year winners. The team will enter the All-Church tourney next week. Scoring in the tournament at Provo among the First ward regulars reg-ulars was quite even with LaMar Weight getting 45 points, Howard Sumsion 41, Nolan Weight 27, Leonard Leo-nard Harward 36 and Ardeen Van Leuvan 26. The best sports carnival to be held in Springville in years was staged in the Memorial hall last Wed. night when the First ward M Men basketball team and American Am-erican Legion presented a mixed card of boxing and wrestling to some 700 local fans". Donald Ostler Ost-ler kayoed Beno. Arcade (Windmill) (Wind-mill) Pierce licked Pete Jensen in the third with a K. O. Springville high school beat Tintic 49-22. Joe Miller, Gordon Livingston, Max Rowland scored highest for Springville. The team plays Payson Friday in their final league game. If they win and Spanish Fork can beat Juab, they will go into a tie for first place. Miss Gretchen Greenlee won the annual high school oratorical contest con-test held in connection with George Geo-rge Washington's birthday. Dick Oakley won second place. Both spoke on, "Character". These two students will represent the high school at the Nebo oratorical contest con-test here in May. Several trucks of food and furniture fur-niture were gathered by the Scouts of the city Saturday in compliance with the national Scout relief and "do a good turn" movement suggested by President Presi-dent Roosevelt. The articles collected col-lected will be distributed to worthy wor-thy families. Mrs. Lililan Snow of Mapleton wishes to announce the marriage of her daughter, Clara, to LeRoy Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Larson of Mt. Pleasant. The ceremony cere-mony took place in Provo and they left to make their home in Mt. Pleasant. The annual Junior Prom will be held Friday evening, March 2, at Memorial Hall, with president Don Anderson of the junior class, i general chairman. Decorations are in charge of Thelma Madsen and Bernice Jensen; advertising, Delia Del-ia Houtz and Mark Whiting; assembly, as-sembly, Virl Harrison. The project of beautifying the Mapleton school began Tuesday. Lawn and shrubs are to be planted surrounding the building. A new cement walk is to be placed from the road to the building and a-round a-round the back door. This is all appreciated by the Mapleton people. peo-ple. Clyde accompanied ac-companied by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Ken-neth Condie left on Wednesday for a- vacation trip to California. Thev plan to spend a short time at Hoover Dam and in Southern Utah. The marriage of Miss Jessie Oaks of Vernal to Bird Beardall is announced taking place Tuesday in the Salt Lake Temple. The bride has been making her home in Provo. (They now reside at Mapleton.)
