Show Football Candidates Open Drills At SHS Camp Some 50 Candidates Are Issued Suits Wednesday; First Grid Game Scheduled Here With Provo, Sept. 10 Head football coach, George Pehrson, greeted some 50 Red Devil grid candidates Wednesday as suits were issued, and the initial football practices opened on the High school gridiron. Assisting Mentor Penr- .son this year will be Paul Wilson, newly signed basketball coach. Mr. Wilson sporta an 'enviable record re-cord both in football and basketball basket-ball from Hurricane. Prospects for this year's team are termed only "fair" by Coach Pehrson after scanning the green-ling green-ling squad and lamenting over the loss of 13 first stringers from last year's team. Included in the list of "former greats" via graduation are: Captain Harold Norton, Jimmy Jim-my Fullmer, Clyde Christensen, Sterling Otteson, Jack Schouten, LaMar Clark, LaMar Hales, Barney Bar-ney Gogarty, Donald Bybee, Jay Barker, Dorlynn Cragun, Billy Duncan Wesley Maag. These players play-ers were doing first string duties t on the team last year and will be hard to replace. Norton, Christensen, Christen-sen, Bybee, and Gogarty in the backfield, practically 'leaves a "backless' backfield: Fullmer, Hales, Clark, ends; Ottesen, Schouten, Barker Duncan, Cragun and Maag completes the line loss for this year, giving Coaches Pehrson Pehr-son and Wilson plenty of holes to fill with the new recruits. Salvaged from ' the squad last year are a number of hopefuls who will form the nucleus of the Red Devil team for this year. They include Captain-elect Jay Stewart, who did a fine tackle job last season. Richard Carter and Gordon Gor-don Smith, along with Russell Jensen, Jen-sen, Bill Jones, Grant Lloyd, Mor- gan Thomas and speedy Reed Miner will take over the duties in the backfield and should form a fast combination. Line tasks will fall to such players as Dan Jones, Frank Hunt, Loyd Hodson, and husky Vernon Weight.
