Bolton and two companions, of Monett, Missouri, Mis-souri, all but lost their lives when they were caught in a labyrinth of passages in the t-aMfc.a" mountainside. IP. B. Bolton The three Were making a casual trip through the Taves In the course of it one of the IZty noticed a small opening in the roof of a cavern. All three crawled up through the hole. They found they were in a series of caves, with passages branching in all directions. In their excitement, excite-ment, they forgot to mark the spot where they entered. They did not realize their predicament until the candles they carried, to warn of foul air as well as provide light, began to run low. But before the last candle flickered flick-ered out, the men knew for a certainty cer-tainty that they were lost One opening after another turned out to be just a hole in the rocks. Taking Tak-ing a single flashlight they had brought along, the three scrambled from one vault to another. "We kept this up for seven hours and a half," Bolton said, "all the time searching desperately for a way out. As a cave explorer, I had seen to it before we started that the batteries in my flashlight were fresh. As it turned out, that precaution pre-caution was all that saved us. There was small chance for rescue because no one knew of the existence of the vaults we were in." Although they emerged from the caverns exhausted, none of the three suffered any ill-effects. |
