Show Saipan Opens Way Z Way To Victory The importance of the capture of Saipan can hardly be overestimated. over-estimated. It will enable us, in the words of Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, "to project surface and air operations that will include the mainland of Japan, Jap-an, the Philippines and the greater part of the Dutch East Indies." It is well that the fleet has attacked at-tacked Saipan because the Japanese, Japa-nese, in their Chinese offensive, have taken one of our airfields and, presumably, will be able to capture others. The possession of Saipan will give us compensatory bases within easy reach of Japan. |
