Show Red Devils Enter 19th Team In State Tournament Red and Blue Team Will Seek Third State Hoop Title; Coach Hughes Has Outstanding Record Springville high school's Red Devil basketeers were crowned Nebo division champions for the second sec-ond consecutive year as a result of a rousing 31 to 29 victory over the Spanish Fork Dons, cellar dwellers of Nebo. The win for the Devils from getting in for close basket shooting. On the offensive line, with plenty of scoring ability, are Kenny Rothwell, Melvin Teasdale, Lyman Rothwell, and Blaine Johnson. These six fellows comprise com-prise the "starters" of the Red and Blue club. Working in with the starting five whenever things are not clicking too smoothly, Blaine Dallin, Glen Clark and Dick Miner have brilliantly filled in and have sparked the Devils on to victory- Eldean Weight, sophomore sopho-more lanky of the team, has exhibited exhi-bited potential strength in the center position. Local hoop followers will trek to the state tourney to cheer for these capable hoopsters in the hopes of a third state hoop championship! Friday night assured them a spot in the Twenty-third Annual Utah State High School Basketball tournament, scheduled for March 19th to 22nd in the U. of U. field house. Killer for 1!t(h Time . . . Coach Art Hughes' Springville hoopsters will be making their 1 Dth trip to the big prep tourney this? year, a record that is held by no other high school in the state. Besides being represented in the state meets for the greatest number num-ber of years, Springville has captured cap-tured two state titles, one in 1917 and one in 1923, consolation winner win-ner in 1924, and fourth place in 1937, with third, sixth and seventh sev-enth places won on other trips to the big joust. Springville has always al-ways had the reputation of having hav-ing plenty of enthusiasm exhibited by the large and enthusiastic group of supporters who have followed fol-lowed the several teams to the big event. Coach Hug-lies' Record . . . One of the most youthful coaches in the state, Art Hughes, a graduate of the Springville high, and a former football and basketball basket-ball star himself, has made a remarkable re-markable record during the short time he has been coaching at Springville. In his fourth year at the high school, Coach Hughes has developed three Nebo division champs and has taken two of th-ase to the state tourney, with this year's making the third. Besides producing champs in the hoop sport, Mentor Hughes has built up a fine spirit of sportsmanship among his boys a quality worth more than the finest trophy and has commanded the respect of his most ardent student and public follows. Our hats are off to this fine exemplar! Team Well-Bnlanced . . . With only four returning veterans veter-ans from last year's Nebo champ quint, Coach Hughes- has built one of the smoothest working combinations combin-ations seen here.
