Show Prep Cinder Stars to j Compete for State Honors at 'Y' Friday Over 200 Topnotch Track And Field Stars From Over The State To Compete; Springville Enters Stars The cream of the 1944 track and field crop throughout the state's high school camps will compete for Prep honors of the state at the Britrham Youncr University stadium in Provo Friday, May 12. The big meet, which draws the! curtain on the cinders sports for the year, will begin at 1:30 p. m. with forty schools having qualified entrants for the championship prep classic. More than 200 athletes ath-letes are expected to compete in the meet, with dopesters favoring Granite to cop the state laurels. What with some of the best marks registered this season in schools throughout the state, and with and high records of Central Utah squads made in district and regional reg-ional meets, the Granite Farmers will have plenty of competition. Payson Wins Region Three Meet Don Fullers Payson trackmen walked off wtih the Region 3 cinder cin-der laurels last Friday at the Brig-ham Brig-ham Yong stadium with a total of 56 points. Provo placed second with 44 ; Spanish Fork, 31 ; third; Springville 27; Lincoln fifth, Pleasant Grove, sxth; American Fork, seventh; Lehi, eighth. Springville took first place in the discuss, Medley relay, and the 880 run. Ray Miller threw the discuss dis-cuss 123 feet 1 inch, for the first-place first-place mark and qualified for the state meet by so doing. He also placed second in. the shotput. Joe Cranmer won the 880 and was clocked at 2:09.7. Springville's Medley time was 3:29 with Owen Ow-en Fullmer, Oral Bartholomew, Joe Cranmer and Bliss Fullmer making mak-ing up the team. These men will enter the state run Friday. Owen Fullmer placed second to qualify in the state meet in the 220-yard dash. Tennis Results . . . J. Reed Bird and John Jensen, playing as the Springville doubles team were defeated in the semifinal semi-final round of play in the Regional Region-al tennis tourney on the Y courts, after they had won their openng match from B. Y. high, 6-4, 6-1. The score for the semi-final match was 6-4, 6-3 for the Lehi doubles team, who won the reg-onal reg-onal crown. |
