Show CONDITIONS IN CHINA DIFFER A recent news item from China illustrates the difficulty of understanding under-standing conditions in a foreign country. The press reported that Gener-alissmo Gener-alissmo Chiang Kai-shek, seeking 'to eliminate some less desirable aspects from his army, ordered that new recruits must not be tied with ropes or put behind bars to prevent desertion. It would probably be erroneous to conclude that large numbers of Chinese recruits desert the army of their country. Certainly, no army ar-my can do much fighting if many recruits must be jailed or tied to prevent their absence. |
